The Premier of KwaZulu-Natal Nomusa Dube-Ncube will on Thursday 28 March lead the Provincial Government Human Rights Commemoration event in Mkhanyakude District Municipality at Makhasa Stadium.
The Premier will join the MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Sipho Hlomuka and Law Enforcement officers to launch the Provincial Easter Weekend Road Safety Plan. The Premier will also visit a water storage facility and 7 boreholes in the Nompondo area at the Nkostina Location in Ward 8.
“This event marks the conclusion of the annual commemorations of the Human Rights Month. However, human rights are everyday issues. For Government service delivery to the people, provision of clean water, road safety are fundamental human rights that our people must always enjoy. It is what those who lost their lives in Sharpeville fought and died for.” said Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube.
The Human Rights Day, which is commemorated on 21 March, is steeped in remembrance of the 69 innocent South Africans who were brutally massacred by the apartheid police in Sharpeville in 1960. This day finds expression in the South African Constitution’s Bill of Rights. This year’s commemoration is observed under the theme: “Three Decades of Respect for and Promotion of Human Rights”.
The Premier will also use the occasion to wish the people of KwaZulu-Natal a happy and safe Easter weekend. “Over the next few days our people will join millions of others across the world in their spiritual revival. Christians will observe Easter and Jews will mark the festival of Passover. We wish all our people well as they memorialize their faiths. We once again come together as a nation of diverse cultural and religious backgrounds and remain as one nation” concluded the Premier
