The KwaZulu-Natal community of Umkomaas on the South Coast is reeling after the brutal murder of 11-year-old Lusanda Nkomo.
Lusanda went missing on 17 March and was found murdered in a field a day later.
The Provincial Government provided support to the Nkomo family including funeral arrangements, which took place on Sunday March 24th.
“On behalf of Government and the people of KwaZulu-Natal we would like to express our condolences to the family of little Lusanda, her friends and teachers. We are deeply hurt by this senseless and gruesome murder of an innocent child. Together with our social partners and communities, we have to work harder to protect children and women against Gender Based Violence” said the Director-General of KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government Dr Nonhlanhla Mkhize, who represented government at the funeral.
Lusanda's alleged rape and murder has sparked outrage amongst residents. Locals launched a massive search after she disappeared and demanded justice after her lifeless body was discovered. A suspect has been arrested and remains in police custody.

The news of Lusanda's death has left the Umkomaas community shattered. Representatives from various organizations, including the KwaZulu-Natal Office of the Premier, have offered their condolences and support to the family.
