The Premier of KwaZulu-Natal Nomusa Dube-Ncube together with MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Sipho Hlomuka will on Sunday (17 March 2024) officially hand over the contractor for the upgrade of P2-53 in uPhongolo Local Municipality.
The Main Road P3-53 is a feeder road to the National Road, N2-32. Its resurfacing at a cost of over R329 million improve accesibility thus benefitting thousands of residents and businesses within the Nongoma, uPhongolo and surrounding areas.
The development of this road will also improve road safety in the area.
Additionally, the upgraded road will help to boost the local economy by making it easier for people to travel to and from the area.
The road improvement is to be implemented using a combination of established contractors and emerging contractors through the Contractor Participation Goal (CPG).
Contracts will be grouped in a way that will maximize employment opportunities and job creations in line with the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) objectives and contract participation goals. This will increase employment opportunities in the area.
The section of the road that is being upgraded also falls under Mgazini Traditional Council under Inkosi Ntshangase and Osuthu Traditional Council under His Majesty King Misizulu kaZwelithini in Ward one and Ward 18.
It also provides access to a number of communities, social facilities, and businesses, including Petergate Primary, Empakama Public, KwaMagwaza Combine Primary, Kitakita High, Bangamaya Combine Primary, Ntshobhana Junior Secondary, Mshanelowesizwe High, Kunzana Clinic,Magudu Police Station, and KwaKhangela Satellite Police Station.
The road also provides access to places of worship, the Mkhuze Game Reserve, agricultural lands, and local trading stores.
Premier Dube-Ncube and MEC Hlomuka will be joined by traditional and local leadership and departmental stakeholders.
