The Premier of KwaZulu-Natal Nomusa Dube-Ncube has reacted with sadness to the news of the untimely passing of Ukhozi FM presenter, Bheka “Beekay” Mchunu.
“As the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government, we bow our heads and extend our deepest condolences to Bheka’s family, friends, colleagues and the entire broadcasting family” said Premier Dube-Ncube
The Premier said that Bheka “Beekay” Mchunu was a true radio icon whose voice resonated across the airwaves and touched the hearts of listeners.
“His untimely passing leaves a void in the broadcasting world. We pay tribute to his remarkable career and lasting impact” said Premier Dube-Ncube
The Premier added that “Beekay’s passing comes at a time when Ukhozi FM listeneres were still nursing the pain of the passing of yet another Ukhozi FM iconic presenter, Irvin Sihlophe, just a few months ago,” said Premier Dube-Ncube.
Paying tribute to Macingwane (Bheka’s clan name), the Premier said: “Bheka was more than a presenter; he was a storyteller, a lover of music, and a bridge connecting communities. His maskandi show, Sigiya Ngengoma, brought the soulful rhythms of Zulu culture to life, while his late-night show, Sibhukuda Kwesimanzozo, kept listeners awake during the quiet hours. His voice was a familiar companion, soothing and engaging.”
Beekay’s broadcasting journey to fame began at Durban Youth Radio, where he honed his craft. His dedication and talent caught the attention of a Coomunity Radio station Izwi Lomzansi, where he continued to weave magic for years.
It was there that Ukhozi FM lured him to KE Masinga Road, the headquarters of the biggest radio station in South Africa.
As was expected, Ukhozi FM listeners and the nation embraced Beekay as he graced the airwaves, becoming a household name.
Born and raised in Dondotha, Bheka was at home with listeners from all backgrounds. His roots grounded him, and his humility endeared him to listeners from all walks of life. Bheka effectively used his voice to connect communities and bridge boundaries.
“As we bid farewell to Beekay, we remember his humility, his passion and energy when on air, and how he kept us company and made us feel at home as Ukhozi FM listeners. May Macingwane, Phakade rest in peace, and may his legacy continue to inspire generations of broadcasters” concluded the Premier
